Paxton was killed by the injection of nanobots into his body, which caused him to have a heart attack. His death was initially classed as a heart attack and not investigated. It was not revealed that he had been murdered until the investigation into Brian Barrow's death.

Lathem targeted Paxton as there was an aspect to his facial structure that Lathem wanted to be included in his own 'perfect face'.
